Version 0.7.1 has been released! Version 0.7.0 never worked like it was supposed to because there where unfortunately too many bugs. Therefor we have spent much time to test this release so that not the same would happen again. A new thing in this release is the concept of plug-ins. Everything that isn’t directly connected to the playing media has been moved to plug-ins, that include the Movie Trailers, Video Library and Playlist.com Music Search. These plug-ins are no longer included but can easily be downloaded and installed from inside the player. Also there are 3 new plug-ins that are available for download. Read more →

New release, new website, new developers and new features… It’s been a long time since last update but now we’re back and moving ahead at full speed. The new version is mostly just a bug fix version that fixes some embarrassing bugs that were apparent in the 0.6.6 version. Also the player has been updated to use the latest version of the VLC code. During the time since the 0.6.6 release I have started my own software company that now employees 3 developers and they will all work partly on the media player and partly on other projects that can generate money. This hopefully means that development of Kantaris Media Player will go much faster in the future.

The latest version of Kantaris has a unique new feature which to my knowledge no other player has, it can detect character encoding of subtitles by analyzing the text. This means that you never have to manually set the character encoding again. The feature is mainly for languages with “funny” characters, like Chinese.

Kantaris for Windows 7
Windows 7 has finally been released which you probably already know unless you have been sleeping under a rock. Since previous versions of Kantaris had some video quality issues on Windows 7 I needed to get a new version out fast. Hopefully the issues are fixed now, I haven’t tested it myself because I’m still running Vista but users have told me it’s now working fine. Another thing that has changed is that I’ve removed the Last.FM radio feature and the replaced it with music from Playlist.com (yes, I know the tab still says Last.FM). The reason is that Last.FM has decided that only paying subscribers will be allowed to listen to the radio from anything other than the embedded player at the official website. I don’t agree with this decision as I think that Last.fm’s open access to the API was one of it’s best feature and it made the service unique but I guess they not making enough money. Anyway I decided to replace it with searchable playlists from Playlist.com. The Playlist.com service is more legally questionable than last.fm but they do have contracts with record labels so I think it’s alright.

On a personal note, I’ve moved to Guiyang, China. It’s not permanent, I’m just here to write some industrial management software for my fathers company. It’s actually very cool here, much better then you get the impression of from western media and things are developing really fast. Just now in this “small” city (population of 4 million) there are 50 skyscrapers being built and I’m not exaggerating.

- Last.FM feature fixed.
- Fixed problem with Kantaris crashing if start up directory is write protected.
- Fixed various problems with the video library feature.
- Mouse cursor problems fixed
- Updated German, Arabic, Russian and Chinese translations. Thanks everyone that have helped out.
If your native language isn’t available or if the translation is outdated please help out. Here is how:
Translate instructions:
I’ve tried to make it as easy as possible to make a translation of Kantaris. The translation files are located inside the language folder in the kantaris folder. For example: “C:\Program Files\Kantaris\Languages”. They are regular .txt files and can be opened with notepad. Filename should be [country code]-[native country name].txt for example sv-Svenska.txt, or en-English.txt. You can get the country codes by looking at the flags in the Kantaris\flags directory. Check the sv-Svenska.txt for what is needed to be translated. The text inside the ‘[' and ']‘ is the text that should be translated. A example:
[Open file to play]=Öppna fil för uppspelning
[original text]=translated text
Ones done, send the file to me in an e-mail

I hate UAC and you probably do too if you have tried to install Kantaris 0.5.5 or 0.5.6 in the “program files” directory on a Vista system with UAC activated. I still don’t know why UAC wouldn’t let Kantaris run from that directory but I’ve changed a few thing I could think of and now Kantaris 0.5.7 runs fine.
